The first post is the hardest so why not start with the basics
Why I am doing this and why this may/may not be the right Substack for you to follow
Below is what I plan to write about. If you are interested in any of these topics, subscribe to follow along. Here is what to expect and if you don’t care but want to follow along regardless…
Topics I plan to write about:
Real estate - Specifically as it relates to scaling business, leadership and enterprise value
Sales - Specifically focused on lessons I have learned about my career in sales. No get rich quick schemes here, just real insights from real experience from the perspective of someone who doesn’t think they have it all figured out (this is me)
Leadership - Specifically as it relates to lessons I have learned on my leadership journey and what I learn from leaders I interact with every day
Private markets - Specifically as it relates to making private markets more accessible, efficient and transparent
Travel - I love to travel and while this will not be a travel blog, I do travel both for work and pleasure (specifically with my family) and think many great lessons can come from travel. I will focus on some of those that inspire me the most.
Podcasts - Specifically my experience as a podcast host, interviewer and curator of great conversations powered by nothing more than curiosity. I will also share edited versions of The Distribution Podcast transcripts here.
Alpha - the importance of this concept in all things private markets but with a specific focus on operational alpha and how investments managers need to think about differentiation going forward.
What to expect:
My thoughts, un-edited written for no purpose other than to get my thoughts from my head down into a format that allows me to share and remember them
Lots of typo’s and incorrect grammar. Spelling errors (likely), punctuation mistakes (for sure) and sentence structure issues (hell yea). Why? Because I don’t care. I don’t mean this to be arrogant but the point is, I am not a author and I don’t want to let perfection get in the way of progress. If you choose to “subscribe” to this substack, I am am confident that you will be able to get the gist of it but if you want perfection, this is NOT the substack for you
Controversial perspectives - Maybe. But not for the sake of being controversial but rather it’s because it’s what I believe/feel/see. Too many people are afraid to share their perspectives, I am not. You don’t need to agree with me but just remember, they are my perspectives.
In addition to what I plan to cover and what you can expect, you should know what guides my desire to post here and create this substack:
A desire to capture my thoughts and document them over time. I hope this serves as a reminder to me… and as a digital time capsule of what is going on around us when we look back decades from now and think.. but this time it’s different… no really
A desire to help readers understand trends in CRE and more broadly in private markets. I feel that I have a unique and privileged perspective and it’s a duty to share general trends, themes and insights that emerge from 100’s of conversation with leaders across private markets
A desire to build a community. With the rise of AI, the importance of authentic and unique perspectives that can be curated and used to help build community will serve as a tool to make us all better. Sharing openly is something I’d expect to see from a community and thus I am happy to take the first step. To be vulnerable and to share what I am seeing. I hope you will do the same.
Let’s get into it…
